Bostoni Eesti Kooli esimene virtuaalne koolipäev / Boston Estonian School's first virtual school
Kui Bostoni Eesti kooli õpilased ja õpetajad 8. märtsil pärast järjekordset toredat koolipäeva nägemiseni ütlesid, ei osanud keegi neist arvata, et järgmist koolipäeva 22. märtsil ei ole võimalik pidada. Selleks ajaks oli Massachusettsi kuberner Charlie Baker COVID-19 viiruse leviku aeglustamiseks palunud kõiki osariigi elanikke koju jääda ja igasugused koosviibimised tuli teadmata ajaks edasi lükata. Bostoni Eesti Kool otsustas märtsi ja aprilli koolipäevad - koolipere kohtub kaks korda kuus pühapäeva pärastlõunatel North Chelmsfordis - ära jätta ja maikuu alguses otsustada, mida ülejäänud kooliaastaga teha.
Aprilli alguses olime kõik kodus olnud - või nagu Eestis öeldakse: kodus püsinud - juba mitu nädalat ja tekkis idee proovida kooliperega kokku saada virtuaalselt. Mõeldud, tehtud. Pühapäeval, 5. aprilli pärastlõunal logisid end Zoomi sisse suur osa kooliperedest ja virtuaalselt said kokku lausa 23 koolipere liiget. Küll oli tore kõiki näha ja kuulda nende kodustest tegemistest! Pärast esimeste muljete jagamist korraldasime väikese viktoriini, milles tuli vastuseid leida küsimustele eesti kultuuri ja poliitika kohta. Kas näiteks teate, mitmes Eesti president on praegune president Kersti Kaljulaid?* Või missuguse raamatu tegelased on Bruno, Lotte ja Susumu?** Kes neist eestlastest on maailmakuulus dirigent - Arvo Pärt, Neeme Järvi, Veljo Tormis või Kalle Randalu?*** Kui meie kooliõpilaste vanemad teadsid vastused kõigile küsimustele, siis kooliõpilastel oli avastamis- ja õppimisrõõmu rohkelt. Pärast viktoriini tegi õpetaja Nele Kaps oma grupiga ka keeletundi edasi - suur tänu talle selle eest! Ja kõigile meie Bostoni Eesti Kooli peredele suur aitäh Zoomis osalemise eest! When the Boston Estonian School students and the teachers said good-bye on March 8 after yet another nice school day, none of them could think that the next school day on March 22 could not be held. By then, Massachusetts Governor Charlie Baker asked all residents of the state to stay home and any gatherings had to be postponed indefinitely in order to help slow the spread of the COVID-19 virus The Boston Estonian School decided to cancel the March and April school days - the school family meets twice a month on Sunday afternoons in North Chelmsford - and will decide in early May what to do with the rest of the school year.
At the beginning of April, we had all been home - or, as they say in Estonia: stayed at home - for several weeks, and the idea arose to try to meet the school family virtually. On the afternoon of Sunday, April 5, a large number of school families signed up for Zoom and 23 school family members joined virtually. It was nice to see everyone and hear about their homework! After sharing the first impressions, we organized a small quiz in which we had to find answers to questions about Estonian culture and politics. For example, do you know how many Estonian presidents have there been including the current president Kersti Kaljulaid? * Or which book are the characters of Bruno, Lotte and Susumu? ** Which of these Estonians is a world-famous conductor - Arvo Pärt, Neeme Järvi, Veljo Tormis or Kalle Randalu? *** A lot of joy of learning. After the quiz, teacher Nele Kaps also took a language lesson with her group - many thanks to her for that!
