Iseseisvuse aastapäeva tähistamine

Sel aastal tähistab BES Eesti 87.-ndat iseseisvuse aastapäeva 19. veebruaril algusega kell 1 pärastlõunal Läti Luteri Kiriku saalis Brookline, Massachusettsis. Peakõnelejaks on sel korral dr. Ain Aaviksoo, kes räägib teemal “Eesti Rahva Tervis ja Selle hoidmine”. Muusikalist meelelahutust pakub pianist Hando Nahkur.

Ain Aaviksoo on sündinud Võru linnas 14.06.1974, lõpetanud Kreutzwaldi Gümnaasiumi (I keskkool). 1992-1999 õppis Tartu Ülikoolis arstiteadust kuni sai arstidiplomi ja üldarsti kutse. 2000-2003 töötas EV sotsiaalministeeriumis, algul projektijuhina ja hiljem rahvatervise osakonna juhatajana. 
Alates 2004. aastast töötab vabakutselise tervishoiueksperdina Poliitikauuringute Keskuses PRAXIS ja uurija-õppejõuna Tartu Ülikooli Tervishoiu Instituudis. 
Aini hobiks on infotehnoloogia tervishoius, millega seoses töötab hetkel partneri-konsultandina ühes väikeses erafirmas Tervisepank. 
2004. aasta septembrist kuni 2005.a juunini omandab Harvardi Ülikooli Rahvatervise Koolis (Harvard School of Public Health) rahvatervishoiu magistrikraadi. 
Ain on abielus ja peres kasvab 2 paari kaksikuid. 

BES’il on hea meel taaskord Hando Nahkurit Bostonis näha. Eelmisel aastal oli meil võimalus Handot kuulata Balti Kontserdi Seeria kavas, kui ta saatis klaveril Hanna-Liina Võsat. 

Hando sündis Eestis ning on reisinud paljudes Euroopa riikides, Kanadas ja Ameerika Ühendriikides. Hando on osalenud kontsertseerial ‘International Young Top Talent’ Amsterdamis Concertgebouwis. Hetkel õpib ta Yale’i Ülikoolis New Haven, Connecticutis professor Boris Berman juhendamisel. 

Aastapäeva raames on Seltsil erakordne võimalus pakkuda rahvale vaatamiseks Eesti Rahvusraamatukogu rändnäitust “Kalevipoeg. Üks ennemuistne Eesti jutt”, mis tähistab 140 aastat eepose esmatrükist ja 200 aastat Fredrich Reinhold Kreutzwaldi sünnist. Rahvuseepost “Kalevipoeg” on ajavahemikus 1857-2004 ilmunud 17 trükki, viimane väljaanne 1998 aastal. Näitusel on erinevad eepose väljaanded, illustratsioonid, ja kuntsiteosed. Näitust saab vaadata ainult aastapäeva tähistamise päeval - 19. veebruaril. 

Kindlasti märgi kalendrisse ürituse uus aadress. Kirik asub Irving Street’i ja High Street’i nurgal, sissepääs on Irving Street’il. Neile, kes üritusele autoga tulevad – kiriku ümbruses tänaval peaks leiduma piisavalt parkimiskohti. 

Kuna tegemist on vabariigi aastapäeva tähistamisega ning üritus toimub uues kohas, mis on seotud suuremate kuludega, palub seltsi juhatus 10 dollarilist annetust.

Estonian Independence Day

The Boston Estonian Society will commemorate the 87th anniversary of the independence of Estonia on the 19th of February at 1 o’clock pm in the Assembly Hall of the Latvian Lutheran Church in Brookline, MA. The program for the event includes keynote speaker Dr. Ain Aaviksoo speaking about “Health and healthcare of the Estonian People”, music performed by pianist Hando Nahkur, and an exhibit on the Estonian epic tale Kalevipoeg from the Estonian National Library. Following the formal part of the program the BES will host a reception to allow everyone to view the exhibit and talk with our speaker and performer. 

Our keynote speaker Dr. Ain Aaviksoo was born on June 14, 1974 in Võru, Estonia and graduated from the Kreutzwald Gümnaasium. He attended Tartu University from 1992 to 1999 and graduated with a Doctor’s degree in family medicine. He has also worked at the Estonian Ministry of Health as project manager and as public health director. Since 2004, Ain is working as a freelance public health expert at PRAXIS and as a research professor at Tartu University Health Care Institute. His hobbies include information technology in heath care, a field that he practices as a partner consultant at a small private firm Tervispank. 
In September of 2004, Ain started his graduate studies at the Harvard School of Public Health and is expected to receive his Masters’ degree in Public Health in June of 2005. 
Ain is married with two sets of twins in the family. 

The BES is excited to have Hando Nahkur return to Boston after his performance last year as part of the Baltic Concert Series where he accompanied Hanna-Liina Võsa. Born in Estonia, Hando has been touring through many European countries, Canada and the US and in particular has taken part in the concert series of the ‘International Young Top Talent’ at Amsterdam Concertgebouw. Currently he is studying under Professor Boris Berman at Yale University, New Haven, CT, pursuing the Certificate in Performance. 

We are very fortunate to have the exhibit “Kalevipoeg. One Estonian Folk tale” curated by the Estonian National Library here in Boston. The exhibit celebrated the 140th anniversary of the first edition, and the 200th birthday of Fredrich Reinhold Kreutzwald. This exhibit highlights the different illustrations, drawings and editions of the epic tale, of which there have been seventeen editions printed between 1857-2004, the most recent in 1998. This will be the only opportunity to see the exhibit in Boston. 

Be sure to mark your calendar with the new location and time. For those who are driving there is plenty of street parking around the church, The church is located on the corner of Irving and High Streets with the entrance located on Irving Street. 

Since the commemoration ceremony is being held in a new location the BES will be asking for a $10 contribution to cover the expenses associated with the location.

Eelmisel aastal toimus seltsi jõulupidu detsembri alguse poole ning taaskord oli meil suurepärane koosviibimine. Suured tänud kõigile, kes osalesid – noored ja vanad, lähemalt ja kaugemalt tulnud, ning eriti neile, kes peo kordaminekuks korraldamisele käed külge lõid.

Pidutsemine algas rõõmsameelse kiriku teenistusega õpetaja Uudo Tari juhendamisel; muusikalise poole eest kandsid taaskord hoolt Epp Sonin, dr. Paul Carlson ning Mike Peipman. Läbi sõnade, muusika ja laulude tõid nad meieni Jõulurõõmu ning lootuse. Südamlikud tänud seltsi jõulupeo rikastamise eest neile kõigile. 

Kiriku teenistuse lõppedes hakkasid toidulõhnad köögist kirikusse tulema. Seltsilised kogunesidki juba tuttavaks saanud kirikusaali, kus traditsiooniline jõulusöök kõigile nautimiseks välja oli pandud. Verivorstid, kartulid, hapukapsad ning pohlamoos olid keelt allaviivalt maitsvad. 

Taaskord suured tänud neile, kes toiduvalmistamise eest hoolt kandsid ja abiks olid. Nagu eelnevalt lubatud sai, ühines ka Jõuluvana meiega, et koos laulda ning lastele kingitusi jagada. Aitähh sulle, Jõuluvana ning kohtumiseni järgmisel aastal. Ja aitähh ka Epule selle eest, et neid, kes Jõuluvana saabumiseks end piisavalt ettevalmistanud ei olnud, klaveril saatis. 
  

BES’i aastakoosolek

Selleaastane aastakoosolek toimub 2. aprillil algusega kell 3 pl. Walthami kirikus ja saab olema natuke teistsugune. Nimelt pakub ametliku osa korvale seltsi juhatus välja kokatunni kus meie perenaised õpetavad “kapsarullide” valmistamist. Teretulnud on kõik kel huvi oma kokakunsti meiega jagada, või kel huvi kapsarullide valmistamist õppida. Palume ka kohale tulla neil kes tahavad oma abiga seltsi tegevust aidata, või kellel on meie tegevuse kohta lihtsalt nõu või soovitusi anda. Loomulikult on teretulnud ka kõik kapsarullide degusteerijad ehk lihtsalt need kes pole ammu kapsarulle söönud ja tahavad meeldetuletuseks maitset suhu saada.

Idaranniku Eesti Suusapäevad
10. - 13. märtsil 2005. a.
JAY PEAK RESORT, RTE 242, JAY, VERMONT

Idaranniku Eesti suusapäevad peetakse Jay Peak'i mäel, põhja Vermondis, Kanada piiri lähedal. Jay Peak on tuntud oma suuruse poolest - suusatamise pindala on üle 385-e aakri, kus on 76 suusarada. 

Võistlused toimuvad murdmaasõidus ja mäelaskumises. Eelregistreerimine osavõtuks vajalik. Laupäeva õhtul toimub üldpidu, kus sissepääs ainult eelmaksuga.

Our Christmas celebration was early this year and it was wonderful. Thank you to everyone who came, young and old, from near and far to participate in our festivities, especially those who were instrumental in preparing for the event. The days festivities began with a joyous Christmas church service led by Rev. Uudo Tari, and with musical accompaniment by Epp Sonin, Dr. Paul Carlson and Mike Peipman. Through words, song and music they shared the joy and hope of the holiday season and we thank them from the bottom of our hearts for enriching our holiday. 

As the church service wound down the smells from the kitchen slipped into the church and we were drawn to the fellowship hall where a bountiful spread of traditional Christmas dinner was shared by all. The blood sausage, potatoes, sauerkraut, and cranberry sauce were delectable and we send a heartfelt thank you to all who contributed in their preparations. Thank you Santa, we look forward to seeing you next year. And thank you to Epp for providing accompaniment for those of us less prepared or a bit shy in performing for Santa. 
   

BES Annual Meeting

This year's BES annual meeting will be held on Saturday the 2nd of April, 2005 at 3:00 p.m. at the Waltham Covenant Church following the Estonian Church Service. Prior to the meeting we will be offering a cooking course in the preparation of cabbage rolls.We welcome you to come and share your recipes and culinary expertise with us or learn of ours. After we finish cooking, tasting and eating we invite everyone to participate in our annual meeting. Always welcome are new people to become active in our work or just be there to participate in our activities and become part of our dynamic BES family. To be at our meeting doesn't obligate you to anything and your input of new ideas, goals and constructive criticism would be valuable to us.

East Coast Estonian Ski Trip
10 - 13 March 2005
JAY PEAK RESORT, RTE 242, JAY, VERMONT

The East Coast Estonian Ski Trip will be held at Jay’s Peak in northern Vermont, almost to the Canadian boarder. Jay’s Peak is known for its size and 385 acres of snow and 76 slopes.
