Balti Kontsertseeria
8. veebruar kell 15:00 
Nagu juba eelmises ringkirjas sai mainitud, toimub järgmine Eesti kontsert pühapäeval, 8. veebruaril 2004 a., kell 3 pärastlõunal. Solistiks Hanna-Liina Võsa, klaveril Hando Nahkur. Kontserdi toimumiskohaks on The First and Second Church in Boston (66 Marlborough Street, Boston, MA). Piletid on saadaval uksel enne kontserdi algust ning pileti hinnaks on $20 täiskasvanutele, $15 vanuritele ja $10 õpilastele. 

Hanna-Liina alustas oma lauljakarjääri Eesti Televisiooni lastekooris Ave Kumpase juhendamisel, ning on laulnud juhtrollides sellistes lavastustes nagu “Oklahoma,” “Cabaret” ning “Les Miserables.” Viimati sai siinne publik Hanna-Liina lauluhäälele kaasa elada muusikali “Grease” üle-ameerikalisel tuuril, kus Hanna-Liina esines Sandy rollis.

Bostoni Eesti Selts tähistab Eesti Vabariigi 86-ndat aastapäeva 22. veebruaril kell 14.00 piduliku kontsert-aktusega meile juba koduseks saanud Covenant Congregational Church’i ruumes (375 Lexington Street, Waltham, MA). Aktuse peakõnelejaks on sel aastal Läti literaat ja tõlkija Anna Zigure, kes kõneleb eesti keeles teemal “Eestlased ja lätlased, üheskoos tuleviku poole.”

Anna Zigure sündis Riias 25. augustil 1948. aastal. Proua Zigure lõpetas Tartu ülikooli eesti filoloogina, töötas Riias korrektorina ja kümmekond aastat Läti Kirjanike Liidu juhatuses. Ta on läti keelde tõlkinud kümneid raamatuid eesti, soome ja ungari keelest. Pärast Läti taasiseseisvust määrati ta suursaadikuks Eestisse (1992-1994) ja Soome (1991-1998). Helsingis jõudis proua Zigure saada koguni diplomaatilise korpuse vanemaks. Et Soomes esitatavad küsimused Balti olude kohta aina kordusid, otsustas suursaadik kirjutada raamatu. Algul ilmuski raamat soomekeelsena. Esimeses osas “Ja siiski nii lähedal...” (eesti keeles 1999. Kirjastus “Olion.” Tõlkinud Ita Saks.) jutustab Anna Zigure oma õpingutest ja nõukogudeaegsetest oludest. Raamatu teine osa “Läti maa ja taevas” käsitleb Läti ajalugu ja praegusolusid. Hetkel on ta vabakutseline kirjanik ja elab mere-äärses Jurmalas.

Aktuse eeskava sisaldab nii uusi kui ka juba traditsiooniks saanud muusikapalasid ja etteasteid solist Epp Soninilt ja Dr. Paul Carlsonilt. Eeskavale järgneb traditsiooniline kohvilaud, ja et see tähtpaevale sobilik saaks, on igaüks teretulnud seda omapoolse lisaga täiendama. Nagu ikka, kõik mis hea maitseb, leiab omale peolaual väärilise koha.

Suur tähtpäev
6. jaanuaril tähistas proua Ilse Roos Brockton’ist oma 100. sünnipäeva. Jaak Juhansoo veetis pärastlõuna proua Roosiga, ning viis talle 24 roosi tähistamaks seda tähtsat päeva. Soovime talle kõike kõige paremat paljudeks aastateks.

Selleaastane Lihavõtte jumalateenistus toimub Covenant Congregational Church’is (375 Lexington Street, Waltham, MA) laupäeval, 10. aprillil kell 15.00. Teenib õpetaja Valdeko Kangro, muusikaline osa Epp Sonini ning Paul Carlsoni poolt. Peale kirikuteenistust on kõik palutud kohvilauda, mille rikastamiseks palume ka kõigil omalt poolt suupoolist kaasa tuua.

Baltic Concert Series
February 8th at 3 p.m.
The much anticipated Estonian concert in the Baltic Concert Series will take place on Sunday February 8 at 3 p.m. at the First and Second Church in Boston (66 Marlborough Street, Boston, MA). Performing will be the Estonian singer Hanna-Liina Võsa, accompanied by Hando Nahkur on the piano. The tickets are available at the door prior to the concert and the cost is $20 for adults, $15 for the elderly, and $10 for students.

Hanna-Liina began her singing career with the children’s choir of the Estonian Television under the guidance of Ave Kumpas. She has performed in lead roles in the Estonian production of such musicals as “Oklahoma,” “Cabaret,” and “Les Miserables.” Most recently local audiences saw her in the role of Sandy in the US National Tour of the musical “Grease.”

Estonian Independence Day
February 22nd at 2 p.m.
The Boston Estonian Society will commemorate the 86th anniversary of the independence of Estonia on Sunday, February 22nd 2 p.m. in the Fellowship Hall of the Covenant Congregational Church (375 Lexington Street, Waltham, MA). The keynote speaker this year will be Latvian proofreader and translator Anna Zigure, who, in Estonian, will discuss the topic “Estonians and Latvians, together towards the future.”

Anna Zigure was born in Latvia on August 25, 1948. She graduated from the University of Tartu with the degree in Estonian language and literature, worked as a proofreader in Riga and for about a decade at the board of the Writers’ Union of Latvia. She has translated dozens of books from Estonian, Finnish, and Hungarian into Latvian. After the Latvian independence she was appointed ambassador to Estonia (1992-1994) and Finland (1991-1998). While in Helsinki, Mrs. Zigure became the leader of the diplomatic corps. As the questions she was asked while in Finland were repeatedly about the situation in the Baltics, the ambassador decided to write a book that was originally published in Finnish. In the first part of the book (published in Estonian in 1999 by Olion, translated by Ita Saks), Mrs. Zigure writes about her studies and the life during the Soviet-era. The second part of the book talks about the past and present of Latvia. At the moment, Anna Zigure is a freelance writer and lives in Jurmala by the sea. 

The musical program will feature new as well as traditional musical pieces from soprano Epp Sonin and Dr. Paul Carlson. Everyone is invited to remain after the ceremony to enjoy our usual coffee hour. We encourage participants to bring cakes and treats to add to our table, and thank those who have contributed in the past.

On January 6, 2004, Mrs. Ilse Roos from Brockton, MA, celebrated her 100th birthday. Jaak Juhansoo spent an afternoon with Mrs. Roos, bringing her two dozen roses from BES to celebrate the great day. We wish her all the best and many more years to come.

This year’s Easter Church Service will be at the Covenant Congregational Church (375 Lexington Street, Waltham, MA) on Saturday, April 10th at 3pm. Officiated by asst. Reverend Valdeko Kangro, music provided by Epp Sonin and Paul Carlson. Everyone is invited to coffee and delicious sweets following the church service. Any and all additions to the food are always welcome.
